Gettysburg National Military Park

Get immersed in Civil War history

Park Snapshot: Gettysburg National Military Park

The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. This battle is now referred to as the “High Water Mark of the Confederacy”—the last meaningful offensive the South would conduct against northern forces and also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address".

Gettysburg National Military Park is the site of the American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg, the Soldiers’ National Cemetery and the commemoration of the great battle of Civil War veterans. The park attracts 1.8 million visitors each year and is open year-round. It offers visitors hiking trails, scenic car tours on over 40 miles of roads, and beautiful vistas overlooking the battlefield and nearby town. There are also over 1,400 monuments and 400 cannons, which dot the landscape. The visitor center at Gettysburg features one of the largest collections of Civil War artifacts in the country.

Gettysburg National Military Park Wildlife

One hundred and eighty-seven species of birds have been identified within the boundaries of the park making Gettysburg NMP a great place for birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. The park contains many acres of open grasslands, wet meadows, hay fields, and pasture lands which provide homes to birds such as the Eastern bluebird or Northern bobwhite. Because the grasslands provide critical habitat to a variety of bird species, a western portion of the park has been designated an Important Bird Area by the state. This designation is valuable because it protects some of the vanishing grassland habitat in Pennsylvania, while also protecting the species of birds that reside there including the state-endangered Loggerhead shrike and Short-eared owl.

Through studies conducted in cooperation with the Pennsylvania State University, a complete inventory of amphibian, reptile, and insect species has been documented. Seven new insect species known to science and at least one new genus of Diptera (flies) were discovered in the wooded areas of Big Round Top, Plum Run area, and Codori-Trostle Thicket!

Park History & Culture

On July 1863, General Robert E. Lee led his army north into Maryland and Pennsylvania, bringing the war directly into northern territory. The Union, commanded by Major General George Gordon Meade, met the Confederate invasion near the Pennsylvania crossroads town of Gettysburg, and what began as a chance encounter quickly turned into a desperate, ferocious battle. The Union victory at the Battle of Gettysburg resulted not only in Lee's retreat to Virginia, but an end to the hopes of the Confederate States of America for independence.

Prominent Gettysburg residents pleaded with Pennsylvania Governor Andrew Curtin for state support to purchase a portion of the battlefield to be set aside as a final resting place for the defenders of the Union cause. Gettysburg lawyer David Wills was appointed the state agent to coordinate the establishment of the new "Soldiers' National Cemetery".

President Abraham Lincoln was invited to attend the dedication of the Soldiers' National Cemetery where he gave his immortal "Gettysburg Address".

Energizing Adventure with the National Parks Conservation Association

NPCA’s Mid-Atlantic staff and volunteers work tirelessly to protect this area’s historic, culturally rich, and naturally spectacular parks. They have protected Gettysburg National Military Park from two casinos proposed nearby and pushed for a bill that changed the boundary of Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania to include the historic Lincoln Train Station and 45 acres at the base of Big Round Top. NPCA furthermore has worked with the National Park Service and the Gettysburg Foundation to execute a 20-year general management plan that returned the battlefield to its 1863 appearance that it now has today.
