Uncover island history, mingle with sea life, and hit the beach
The quaint, anchor-shaped island of Awashima was once an important port and home to a prestigious sailing school, dating back to 1897. Check out model ships and navigational instruments at the Awashima Marine Memorial Park and then stroll through the town’s charming streets, stopping in at the Missing Post Office to see the collection of undeliverable letters that was originally part of the Setouchi Triennale Art Festival. Catch the dolphin and sea lion shows at Awashima Marine Park and hike up to Jonoyama Viewpoint for amazing vistas of the area. Venture off the island to go snorkeling and swimming at picturesque Cape Ose, see moon jellyfish and other sea creatures at Numazu Deep Sea Aquarium, and ride the cable car in Izunokuni Panorama Park. You can also stroll over the pedestrian-only Mishima Skywalk, Japan’s longest suspension bridge, which offers incredible views of Mount Fuji, and go shopping at LaLaport Numazu or Gotemba Premium Outlets®.
